Ulster Defence Regiment anniversary

April 1 marked 50 years since the Ulster Defence Regiment first became operational. Many Orange Brethren and Sisters served in the Ulster Defence Regiment through the Troubles, many paying the ultimate sacrifice at the hands of terrorists.

One Orangeman from Maguiresbridge LOL No. 450 - Bro. Eric Glass D.C.M., Q.G.M. became the most highly decorated soldier in the Regiment's 22 year history.

There were at least two attempts on his life. A dog warden for the council, the IRA lured him to an isolated farmhouse with a report of a dangerous dog. He was ambushed by a four-man terrorist gang. Despite being wounded he managed to return fire and kill one of his attackers. For this action he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal having previously been awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal for another act of bravery.
