Launched on St. Patrick’s Day 1938, the Light Cruiser HMS Belfast would go on to have a memorable career.
It played a vital role in escorting Arctic convoys before helping to destroy the German Battleship, Scharnhorst, and participating in Operation Overlord in 1944.
HMS Belfast would go on to serve during the Korean War before becoming a floating museum upon its decommissioning.

Running local history sessions, I can see the St Patrick’s Day launch becoming a useful entry point for school groups. It connects the centenary to a tangible object, though I’d pair it with contrasting sources so the discussion doesn’t stay one-sided.

My grandfather worked in the shipyard around that time, so reading about the HMS Belfast launch brought that straight back. Strange to think how a warship from 1938 now doubles as a quiet symbol of Belfast’s industrial past and this centenary moment.
